8 Reasons Why Your Skin Looks Older Than Your Age

8 Reasons Why Your Skin Looks Older Than Your Age

By Angela Ilagan | | habits that will make you old, premature skin aging, Skin, skin aging, Skin health, Skin tips, why your skin looks older than your age

It's totally natural for our skin to age with time. However, skin aging for some shows up earlier than it should.

If your skin looks tired, old, and unhealthy for your age, it's time to take some action. But before you address your premature skin aging process, it may be also helpful to know the probable cause.

Aside from the obvious reason that accelerates skin aging, our bad habits can also contribute a great deal to the aging process.

Here are a few habits that can speed up skin aging;

1. Unhealthy eating

What you eat has a huge effect on your skin. Truth is, even though sugar and other refined carbohydrates/ high-fat diet is fun to eat, unhealthy food can actually accelerate aging. In fact, even the way the food was cooked such as frying, grilling, and baking can potentially make your skin looks old.

Unfortunately, what goes inside your body will just eventually find its way out to the surface.

So, the next time you find yourself tempted to eat a lot of unhealthy food, think again. Instead choose to eat green leafy vegetables, fruits, and whole grains to have better skin.

2. Sedentary Lifestyle

If you're such an inactive person who sits almost all day long except for sleeping, you're a candidate for premature aging.

Studies have shown that a sedentary lifestyle can make your cells age faster which leads to acceleration of skin aging as well.

3. Sleep deprivation

Notice that your skin looks dry and unhealthy if you lack enough sleep?

Just as how food makes your cells age faster, so is your quality of sleep. Not getting quality sleep can disrupt the skin renewal process which normally takes place during sleep. This goes to say that if it's not necessary to pull off an all-nighter, don't. Sleep it off instead. This will be helpful to your skin and your overall health as well.

4. Bad sleeping position and drinking from a straw

Too bad, sipping out of a straw, which is also my habit can actually cause a fine line around your mouth. So, better avoid straws all the time.

And also, take note that poor sleeping position can also distort the skin. This is why it's worst to sleep on your stomach all the time, especially when you're older.

Sleeping on your stomach may put unnecessary stress on your skin which leads to more wrinkles on your face and other parts of the body.

5. Rubbing your eyes too much

Nothing beats a rub on the eyes when it feels so itchy however, doing this persistently can cause fine lines and even dark circles. Remember that the skin around the eye is weak and very delicate, so a gentle touch is needed.

6. Too much and constant use of electronic devices

This habit may be hard to avoid due to our work, but still, if we can somehow give our skin a short break once in a while from blue light emission, that's going to be helpful for our skin.

This is because High energy visible (HEV) light emission can accelerate skin aging more than the effect of the sun's UV rays, based on research done in Japan.

7. You're not drinking enough water

Hydrating your skin is one of the best secrets to having youthful glowing skin. And so, if you're not drinking enough water, it can result in skin sensitivity, wrinkles, and even irritation.

8. Not using sun protection

Wearing sunscreen isn't just for the beach and outdoor trips, it's also a way to protect your skin from premature aging.

UV light exposure is in fact, responsible for almost 80 percent of facial wrinkles and skin pigmentation.

Don't make it a habit of not using SPF daily during the day even if you're not going out.
