The journey of pregnancy is typically filled with excitement and joy, but for Renata and Lindsay, their experience took an unexpected turn when they were diagnosed with cancer. Fear and anxiety threatened to overshadow their dreams of motherhood, but their stories of survival and determination serve as a beacon of hope for others facing similar challenges.

Here are two inspiring journeys of mothers who beat cancer even during pregnancy.

Renata's Journey of Survival

Renata, a research scientist in bioanalysis, never imagined that cancer would touch her life due to her healthy lifestyle. However, in February 2021, she began experiencing unusual fatigue, which she initially attributed to her demanding workload. A few weeks later, shortness of breath added to her concerns.

On March 4, her world took an unexpected turn when she discovered she was pregnant. While this brought immense joy, Renata couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. Despite sharing her symptoms, such as nausea and fever, with her obstetrician-gynecologist, a diagnosis of ear infection was initially made. She underwent anti-nausea medication, which makes things worse. Then she run several laboratory test to find out the root cause.

Several weeks later, Renata received a devastating diagnosis: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a blood cancer, while being pregnant. She was ten weeks pregnant then.

Faced with an incredibly difficult decision, one option being the termination of her pregnancy due to her deteriorating health, Renata chose to continue with her pregnancy. Her unborn son became her source of strength and ultimately saved her life. Thankfully, her baby was born completely healthy, bringing immense joy and hope amidst the challenging journey.

Here's her interview in The Patient Story:

Lindsay's story is another testament to the resilience of the human spirit. At 29 years old, she received a life-altering diagnosis of stage 4 breast cancer. Given only six months to live, she refused to give up hope. Lindsay made the courageous decision to deliver her baby girl prematurely, embarking on a rigorous journey of eight rounds of chemotherapy.

With unwavering determination and the support of her loved ones, Lindsay's cancer eventually went into complete remission. Her journey serves as a powerful reminder of the strength that lies within us when faced with unimaginable challenges.

Cancer in Pregnancy

According to Cancer.net, there are approximately 1 in 1,000 pregnant women are diagnosed with cancer each year  this can be a challenging and overwhelming experience.

The most common cancers encountered among expectant mothers includes breast, colon, cervical, thyroid,  leukemia, lymphoma, melanoma, and ovarian cancers.

Breast cancer remains one of the most prevalent forms of cancer identified during pregnancy. This alignment with younger women is a reminder of the importance of breast health awareness at every stage of life. Similarly, cervical cancer, associated with certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), can also manifest during pregnancy.

This makes nutrition, early prevention and detection, stress management, as well as healthy lifestyle paramount in women's health. Moreover, nutrition plays a huge role in beating, reversing, and gaining strength from chemotherapy while battling with this devastating disease.

Moringa and cancer

Moringa oleifera, commonly known as the Moringa tree, has gained significant attention for its health benefits and potential to cure diseases.

Studies have revealed that Moringa extracts possess anticancer effects due to it's potential in inducing apoptosis and inhibit the growth of cancer cells. While there's no solid evidence yet, several studies already suggest the possibilities of Moringa properties that could aid in cancer treatment.

More so, moringa's immune-boosting compounds, such as vitamins A, C, and E, along with 92 plus nutrients and essential minerals like zinc and selenium, may help support a healthy immune system. A  strong immune response is crucial in identifying and eliminating cancer cells.

Moringa's antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties, coupled with its immune-boosting effects and conventional treatments , make it an intriguing avenue for exploration in the field of cancer research.

Moringa holds promise as a complementary therapy in combination with conventional treatments, however, it's important to note that further research, including clinical trials, is needed to fully understand Moringa's potential role in cancer prevention and treatment.
